Bank of affirmations (Wisefour-09-EN)
Positive affirmations are phrases you can say, either aloud or in your head, to affirm yourself and build yourself up — especially when you are in the middle of difficult situations. They’re a way of helping overcome negative thoughts that can sometimes take over and make you doubt yourself.
In this workshop, the trainer asks the participants to write down a list of affirmations they want to embody or adopt as their own belief. Everyone can read their list out loud, and provide time for the group to add any new ones that may have come as inspiration from another person's list. Then, everyone writes their affirmations in separate pieces of paper, decorates them and puts them in their "bank". This exercise works well if everyone has 52, one for each week of the year to withdraw an affirmation.

Group work, with trainer
Materials
- One box or container per participant. Square tissue boxes are perfect, but also wooden boxes, recycled containers, or even jars can be used.
- Photographs of the participants (may be used for the decoration of the cards and make them more personal)
- Decorating supplies (sequins, paint, scrapbook stickers, pencils, markers, sharpies, glitter, buttons, etc.)
- Sticky notes, blank paper cards or pieces of paper to write down the affirmations
Preparation
The trainer needs to have available all the necessary materials and also one box-bank for each participant that they will decorate and put in their affirmations.
Time for preparation
Almost 60’.
Tips for implementation
There’s no one-size-fits-all affirmation, so each participant has to figure out which feels right to them.
IMPORTANT! Employing positive affirmations doesn’t mean talking yourself into denying the difficulties of your life or the world around you.
Each participant must identify positive affirmations that acknowledge the reality of their current situation but call on their own ability to push through and to thrive.
Lastly, while this exercise can certainly work as an exercise for individuals, it's even more effective when done with others, to generate communication among participants and foster the sense of accountability that a group creates.

Description in clear steps
Step 1: Write down a list of affirmations
The trainer asks the participants to write down a list of affirmations they want to embody or adopt as their own belief. Everyone can read their list out loud, and provide time for the group to add any new ones that may have come as inspiration from another person's list.
Step 2: Write down each affirmation in a separate piece of paper
Now, each participant writes down each one of their affirmations in a sticky note, card or piece of paper.
Step 3: Decorate the cards
Using the available supplies each participant decorates the cards and then puts them in their bank. This exercise works well if everyone has 52, one for each week of the year to withdraw an affirmation.
Step 4: Pair your affirmations with action!
Positive thinking is one of the first steps toward positive action — but positive thinking alone is not enough!

Self-description of contributor and his/her offers
Thanasis Foukas was born in Athens, Greece. Although his early plan was to study economics to become an accounting assistant, he soon realized that his passion was photography and decided to dedicate himself to that and follow his dream. In 2000 he registered at the Vocational Training Institute LEICA ACADEMY and graduated two years later having gained valuable knowledge and experience in his field.
But that was just the beginning for him! Since then, he has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Greece and abroad, whereas his solo exhibition in Athens (2003) on the subject of cultural events was a great success! He has collaborated with many renowned photographers and with the daily and periodical press in Greece and Cyprus. The sectors that most intrigue him as a professional are theatre, music, cultural events, as well as sports and social reporting.
