Objet trouve (DHWB-08-EN)
During the early history of surrealist art, artists discovered the strategy of “objet trouve” – objects found and experienced as art by being put in a context of artistic perception or environment, often with small modifications or assembled in unusual combinations (assemblage). We invite you to try this sometimes very funny activity as creativity in the surrealist tradition.

Resources/References
Marcel Duchamp is seen as the pioneer of this idea, but many followed, and even today artists such as Ai Wei Wei take up this technique.

The Mirriam-Webster dictionary defines this: “a natural or discarded object found by chance and held to have aesthetic value” or as an ordinary object, as a piece of driftwood, a shell, or a manufactured article, that is treated as an object of art by one who finds it aesthetically pleasing“. In this exercise we invite you to have fun with this idea- walk around your house or public places and take up objects that might fit in this definition, and put them in your own surrealist museum you create at home, and give them an innovative title.

Learning outcomes
Through this method/action, these benefits are achieved:
- See your environment with new ideas as playground for creativity
- Realise that no long-term training or expensive technology is necessary to become creative
Description in clear steps
- Create the museum/exhibition space in your home
- Take a walk in your home or outside and wait what objects come up, collect them (of course only if the are free to take or you can buy them cheaply)
- Either give them a little “touch” or assemble them in an unusual and unexpected combination
- Put them in your museum, maybe with an original or playful title
