Get to know your neighborhood (DHWB-09-EN)

Description

This exercise is about curiously exploring the neighbourhood with your camera or smartphone. It doesn't matter if you have just arrived, or if you have been here for a while, or have lived here forever. It is all about curious attention and (re)discovering exciting and possibly new things.

Imagine, you arrived in a new city / country / neighbourhood. You need to get to know your new surroundings. Just grab your phone and stroll around in your new home. Take pictures of your new surroundings, figure out how your new neighbourhood looks like. Take your time and come back to meet the group and share your experiences. Create a map of your new home!

Title

Get to know your neighborhood

Method

Excursion is necessary. This can be done in group work or individually.

Materials

  • A camera or even easier: your phone

  • A printer and/or a photo shop where each participant can print out 5 photos

Preparation

  • Everyone needs a phone / camera

  • A printing possibility

  • Optional, but worth it: a space where the photos can be exhibited publicly

Tips for implementation

Trainers: maybe it helps to do the exercise before as well. Try to get to know your neighbourhood, figure out what catches your “lens”, what is new / important / different etc. for you…

It would be interesting to offer an exhibition for the participants. So, they can share their photos (and therefore their “findings” publicly. So even visitors get a different point of view of their neighbourhood… and people get the chance to meet each other and discuss.

Learning outcomes

Through this method/action, these benefits are achieved:

  • Getting to know your new neighbourhood
  • See things differently
  • Get in touch with people through your lens
  • Try to catch what is important for you

Description in clear steps

Step 1:

  • Take your phone (or take a camera) and go for a walk in your new neighbourhood. Allow yourself some time to stroll around and capture motives that inspire, scare, interest… you.

Step 2:

  • Select your 5 preferred photos and print them out. Go back to the group and talk about your photos and experiences.

Step 3:

  • These photos can be mounted on walls and a public exhibition could be organized – people get in touch, meet each other and learn from each other. Or create a map of your new home.
