The Maze (Wisefour-11-EN)
This is a fun exercise that promotes problem solving and self-efficacy. It has a focus on communication and trust among the participants, who are working as a team in achieving the desired goal. This is an exercise to build up trust, listen to and give instructions and set goals. The goal here is to navigate through a maze of obstacles, in a specific time frame, with the guidance and support of the team. It requires a bit of preparation but can be a rather rewarding activity.

Title
The ‘Me Tree’
Method
Group work
Materials
- Objects and space to create an obstacle course (be as creative and challenging as you like)
- A blindfold
- A timer
- Pen and paper
Preparation
The trainer needs to create an obstacle course. This can be done outside with basic gym equipment, or inside with office equipment (desks, chairs, etc.). The idea is to create a maze or course with obstacles through which participants will need to navigate.
Time for preparation
About 30 minutes.
Tips for implementation
The trainer guides participants to reflect on the different aspects of achieving a goal. He encourages participation and works on the establishment of a trust relationship among the members of each group. He makes sure that everybody gets actively involved and has his chance to navigate through the maze. After the end of the exercise, the trainer guides the participants to reflect on one goal they have and identify the obstacles that may get in their way, as well as the resources around them that can help them achieve it.

Learning outcomes
Through this method/action, these benefits are achieved:
- Participants reflect on the different aspects of achieving a goal
- Participants learn to act within a specific timeframe
- Participants learn to use the available resources (in that case, each other) to achieve their goals
- Participants learn to identify obstacles that may get in their way
Description in clear steps
Step 1:
The trainer divides the group into pairs or small groups. Within each group, the members must decide on how quickly they want to complete the obstacle course/maze. These times can be written up so there is a little competition by challenging the teams to beat each other. The obstacle course is not visible to the participants in advance.
Step 2:
One participant from each team is blindfolded. With the verbal guidance from their other teammates, they need to try and navigate through the obstacles within the set time goal.
Step 3:
The trainer gives each participant an attempt at beating their time goal, until there is an overall winner.
Once the exercise is finished, each participant can reflect on one goal they have and identify the obstacles that may get in the way and the resources around them that can help them achieve it.
